I take pretty good care of my skin because I was scared straight to do so years ago on two very separate occasions. The first happened shortly after I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. While researching my diagnosis I came across an article stating persons with diabetes were often prone to skin disorders from dry skin, to skin infections, and wounds that are slow to heal. I read diabetes accelerates the aging process and causes people to look older than their actual age. Gulp! I started piling on the moisturizers!
As if that weren’t enough, a number of years later while attending culinary school to become a pastry chef, one of my instructors said bakers age faster because they continually slave over hot ovens which eventually bakes their skin. Say what? I guess when you really think about this it makes sense. So, between diabetes and baking I was destined to age fast.
This could have been the end of my story, except I refused to go down without a fight. I began to research vitamins, minerals and supplements said to be good for the skin, started experimenting with various moisturizing creams and lotions; made changes to my diet, began to drink more water, and even purchased a few skincare tools. Most importantly, I made a concerted effort to keep my blood glucose levels low. The result has been I now have great skin for my age.
