DJI Mavic Mini – View of the Ohio river from the North Shore. | Pittsburgh Drone Pilot

My son-in-law, John “Zagi” Jones, is a FAA certified and licensed Part 107 drone pilot in the Pittsburgh area. He teaches drone and robotics instruction to disadvantaged youth in the Pittsburgh and surrounding area public school systems. John also handles sales and deliveries for The Diabetic Pastry Chef and Tara-Peri Chicken. Below is one of his many drone videos. This aerial view makes a simple barge traveling down the Ohio River actually look interesting! The fluttering you see at the very beginning of the video is a shadow of the drone beginning to take off. The end of the video shows the mini drone return to John and his friend, Dan. John is available to film drone footage for events. Be sure to enlarge your screen to get the full effect of this video.

Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have many uses, including:

  • Search and rescue Drones can capture images to help locate people in need and assess disaster zones. They can also be used in maritime rescue.
  • Surveillance Drones can capture images and data from above using cameras and sensors.
  • Agriculture Drones can help with crop production, monitoring crop growth, and precision agriculture tasks like planting, pesticide application, and soil analysis.
  • Delivery services Drones can deliver products like food, medical supplies, and e-commerce goods. Drones are used to deliver insulin in Africa, along with other medical supplies and blood.
  • First responders Drones can reach an emergency location faster than a vehicle and assess the situation before human responders arrive.
  • Photography Drones can capture images from a bird’s eye view, allowing photographers to get angles that would otherwise be difficult to achieve.
  • Videography Drones can provide great B-roll footage and add a unique perspective to main videography.
  • Accident investigations Drones can analyze accident scenes, determine emergency routes, and locate survivors.

Other uses for drones include:

  • Monitoring traffic
  • Weather observations and measurements for firefighting
  • Military defense
  • Border surveillance
  • Archaeological inspection
  • Animal tracking

The Diabetic Pastry Chef and Tara-Peri Chicken are considering adding local restaurant delivery via drones for those who live in certain portions of the Pittsburgh, PA area.
